The pharynx is the part of the throat situated back of the root of the tongue and behind the front arch and uvulva of the soft palate. In height, it extends from the base of the skull to the top of the larynx and esophagus.
The pharynx is a continuation and an expanded portion of the mouth and nasal cavity. It is about 5 inches long and is widest in its upper part, where the back outlets of the nose (posterior nares) open into it.
The pharynx has opening into it: the mouth, the 2 posterior nares, the 2 Eustachian tubes, the larynx and the esophagus. The tonsils are situated at the front entrance of the pharynx, actually on the inside of its front door, so that the tonsils are considered as located in the pharynx or throat and not in the mouth.
The back wall of the pharynx is formed by the first six cervical vertebra. The pharynx is covered by a bright pink, healthy mucous membrane.
But not so in smokers, whose pharynx appears a sickly red and is often studded with pin headsized granular swellings.
This unhealthy condition of smokers' throats makes them constantly feel as if they had to cough and gag in order to get something out of their throats. Usually, there is a layer of viscid secretion in such throats. What smoking does to your larynx, lungs and the rest of your body can be judged by the appearance of the larynx
